Isobel Baillie (born 1895 in Hawick, Scotland, died 1983 in Manchester) gave her first public performance of Messiah at the age of 15. She rose to become one of Britain’s leading sopranos in oratorio and lieder, being renowned for her pure and clear style of singing, and she also found success on the operatic stage.

She was awarded the CBE and became “Dame Isobel” in 1978. She also taught in England and the USA, and continued to give lectures and recitals until a very advanced age.
