Henri-Claude Fantapié is regarded by music critics as one of the foremost specialists of F.J. Haydn. After studies in Nice and Monaco, he worked in Paris with Eugène Bigot, Igor Markevitch and studied composition under Henri Dutilleux. Awarded first prize in the Besançon International Conductors Competition, and winner of many national and international prizes, he is also a musicologist and composer. His preferred repertoire covers music of the XVIII th and XX th centuries (with the Solistes de Paris), as well as music of the XIX th century with symphony orchestras in Europe and America of which he is guest conductor, invited generally to conduct French music. A professor of orchestral conducting on the courses run by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, he also teaches this subject in Seine-Saint-Denis ; he is frequently called on to head national and European young musician orchestras. He is currently the director of the Jeune Philharmonie de Seine-Saint-Denis and of the DIONYSOS chamber orchestra, producing and recording with them numerous works of contemporary music. The author of books and articles on conducting and on Finnish music, he devotes some of his time to composing.

Les Solistes de Paris were founded in 1964 by Henri-Claude Fantapié and since then they have figured ever more frequently on the international music scene. The history of the orchestra is marked by a wide range of recordings (F. Couperin, A. Scarlatti, Telemann, Tartini, Vivaldi, a complete edition of the 17 symphonies of D. Scarlatti, Haydn, Villa-Lobos, J. Wiener) and by its participation in most major international festivals in the company of soloists of the first rank (M. Rostropovitch, P. Tortelier, L. and P. Kogan, H. Szeryng, J.F. Manzone, T. Vesmas, N. Zabaleta, A.M. Bondi, M. Mesplé, B. Soustrot and R.André, among others). From its inception, the position of
concertmaster has been held by Jacques Francis Manzone. Since 1977, Raphaëlle des Graviers has also been appointed first violin of the orchestra. After performing in over 600 concerts, the orchestra moved permanently to Seine-Saint-Denis and it now no longer performs as a unit, with its members devoting their time to training young musicians and providing support for the local and regional orchestras of which Henri-Claude Fantapié is director.
