Vladimir Ponkin is one of Russia's leading conductors. Born in 1951 he graduated from the Gorky and Moscow Conservatories. He has developed a wide range of repertoire working with many Russian orchestras and also in Poland with the Krakow Philharmonic. From 1990 to 2004 Ponkin worked with the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, helping it to become renowned and popular throughout Europe.

He has premiered many compositions by such as Penderecki and Lutoslawski, and has worked with a good number of the top soloists including Angela Gheorghiu, José Cura, Evgeny Kissin and many more. He has also worked internationally with several leading orchestras, including the BBC Symphony, St. Petersburg Symphony and with most of the principal orchestras in Australia.

Since 2004 Mr. Ponkin has been a professor at the Moscow Conservatory, and holds other administrative and teaching posts. He is also artistic director and chief conductor of the Helikon Opera Theatre in Moscow and chief conductor of the Kuban Symphony.
